default 404 to 410

My wordpress blog has huge number of 404 errors more than 10,000
Can I by default set or make all 404 errors to show 410 error with out adding them to the ‘Obsolete URLs’ .

Adding 404 errors to ‘Obsolete URLs’ is taking huge time, I did it all day uestarday and ‘Recent 404 errors’ is still getting populated. I have set ‘Recent 404 errors’ log to 10000 but still it did not help.
