Change “Register” Text

Is it possible to change the “Register” button/link text to something else? I’m trying to change it to “Apply.” I’m assuming I’ll have to change the PHP files, but won’t that erase the changes when the plugin is updated? Or is there a way to make a “child plugin” like there is for child themes?
